What is a Systemic & Family Constellation Therapy and how it can help?

Systemic and Family Constellation is a powerful tool to get insights on issues related to one’s personal and professional life. These insights lead to a shift in us, both at the level of conscious and unconscious. This shift helps us move closer to the resolutions which are in our best and highest interest.

Family and Systemic constellation was pioneered by German psychotherapist “Bert Hellinger”, who has also studied psychoanalysis, family therapy, gestalt therapy and transactional analysis. Hellinger’s innovative approach allowed the way for application of constellations to not just personal problems but also problems that occur within an organisation.

Constellation work is a process by which systemic influences on a person are made visible. In setting up a constellation, a participant selects people to represent his or her family members and moves them around the room until their relative positions reflect the participants experience of his or her family. When this movement is done silently and with respect, the representatives report experiences similar to those of the original family members. The dynamics of the family relationship can be observed.

When does a Family Constellation make sense?

A family constellation is not a panacea and not indicated for every issue. In addition, a constellation is not synonymous with therapy. However, it can make sense if problems probably have to do with the family or have a suspected family background. Anyone who wants to do a Family Constellation should therefore have a specific question. Questions or reasons for a constellation are, for example:

  • Inexplicable, recurring strains, crises, separation or failure of life goals

  • Suspected blockages through beliefs that are current in the family system (never make debts, divorce is sin! Etc.)

  • Strong feelings of guilt, obligations or remorse that cannot be explained.

  • A suspected or actually experienced trauma within the family (if the constellation is part of a psychotherapy)

  • Quarrels, conflicts, avoidance of contact with family members (or other close persons)

  • The assumption that certain diseases could be related to the family

  • Unfulfilled desire for children

  • Inexplicable feeling of loss of a human with the suspicion of having a lost twin

  • Self-esteem problems, as far as they are justified in early childhood.

  • Etc.
